Notable producers and DJs that led to the development of freeform hardcore in the United Kingdom include Sharkey, original coiner of the term and Bonkers DJ, Kevin Energy, founder of the Nu Energy Collective, and Billy “Daniel” Bunter. UK Hardcore went to emerge in the late-90s as an offshoot of happy hardcore which shared various stylistic similarities with freeform, notably the substitution of earlier rave elements with more contemporary influences.

In the Netherlands, a form of Dutch trancecore music became prominent by the Cenobite Records label, infusing Gabber rhythms with the melodic elements and accessible appeal of most freeform. Certain trancecore producers went to share compositional traits with early Psytrance, which has led this style to be alternatively known as “psycore”, hence the name.
